The Electrical Power and Energy Systems (EPES) is a complex yet critical infrastructure that is also vulnerable to cyberattacks. Protecting these systems is vital for the smooth operation of sectors like transportation, communication, industry, finance, disaster, response, water and energy.

In this context, the EU-funded ELECTRON project, which started in October 2021 and will end in September 2024, will address the need to shield against a variety of threats – from cybersecurity incidents and privacy violations to electricity disturbances and severe human errors caused by a lack of relevant training.

Specifically, the project will develop a new-generation EPES platform capable of empowering the resilience of energy systems through risk assessment, anomaly detection/prevention, failure mitigation and energy restoration.

Our role

Atos leads work package 4 on Next Generation EPES Cyber-defence & Protection. Atos will deliver an enhanced version of its XL-SIEM, called XL-SIEM+, for (a) Extended situational awareness of attacks and malicious activities across different layers of an EPES infrastructure and across different networked EPES infrastructures; and (b) High visibility of ELECTRON framework security.

As work package 4 leader, Atos will play an important role in the coordination and delivery of the ELECTRON’s CYPER Framework, an integration of XL-SIEM+, AI-assisted intrusion detection using federated learning, and post-quantum privacy-preserving solutions (cryptography and digital signature) for Advanced Metering Infrastructures. Atos will also lead the ELECTRON’s Cybersecurity SharePoint solution where various EPES and other Critical Infrastructure stakeholders can anonymously share with each other cybersecurity incidents.
